Back to beauty basics…

As a beauty editor, it is part of the job description to chase new trends and report back on the latest/greatest releases from the big brands, while uncovering niche companies that deserve championing.

However, as the season’s change, I’ve been reaching for some ol’ favourites in the skincare department, that I thought deserved a little post of their own.

Eve Lom Cleanser: A pot of this is usually to be found amongst my birthday/Christmas presents. Yes, it’s expensive but even when used daily, I rarely get through more than 2 a year. I have tried every cleansing wash, milk, oil under the sun but this will forever remain my favourite (although Keraskin’s Huile Nudite comes a very close second). Eve Lom’s herbal balm melts away make-up gently, while the prescribed facial massage really does de-puff and refine contours. Used with the enclosed muslin cloth my face feels super clean (although NOT tight and squeaky), soft and after even a couple of days, the clarity is amazing. £55, 100ml, evelom.com

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant: I’d forgotten just what a good exfoliant this is. I only use this once/twice a week but I love the formula. Sprinkle out the powder onto wet hands and it becomes a creamy paste with fine, rice-based exfoliants. It’s got salicylic acid in it too to brighten. Yes there are cheaper exfoliants on the market, but the ‘micro’ particles in this are ideal for a thorough sloughing that doesn’t cause redness or sensitivity.£38.50, 75ml, www.dermalogica.com/uk (the bottle pictured is a travel size version).

Clarins Beauty flash balm: There is a reason why, after 20 years on the market, this is still topping the best-selling beauty lists. I pat it into skin post-moisturiser/pre-foundation and, especially at this time of year when skin can be a bit dull and grey, it give skin a ‘whoosh’. It’s not a highlighter, it works to prep skin, smoothing the surface, diffusing any fine lines and just gives skin a much needed little pick-me-up. £28, 50ml, clarins.co.uk (the tube pictured is a travel size, too).
