So, I thought I’d do a series of posts on my plans for a serious nutrition overhaul. I’m not calling it a diet as to me, that relates to weight-loss. My plan is to literally feed my completely broken immune system back to health.
I’ve seen my consultant today and have been given strict instructions that the only cure for glandular fever is rest, rest and nutrition. I’m basically back at square one with my immune system and it needs all the help it can get.
So, from the top:
I’m going to be kicking off with a Purifyne Green Juice Cleanse. As a health and beauty editor in West London in the Noughties, I think I must have tried every juice fast going. This time round, rather than chasing a quick 5lbs weight-loss, I’ve opted for the 3-day green juice cleanse that is designed to restore my body’s alkaline balance and thus, boost my immune system. So, lots of cold-pressed green vegetables, full of chlorophyll which will be a great foundation for my stressed, depleted, energy-deficient body. Plus it’s delivered to my door with zero effort on my part. As I can’t drag my sorry self off the sofa at the minute, shopping for my body weight in Kale is off the agenda.
Then, there will lots more recipes from Natasha Corrett and Vicki Edgson’s brilliant Honestly Healthy book that I extolled here; refined sugar absolutely cripples your immune system so I am even more hell-bent on ditching the white stuff for good. Before you worry about the lack of comfort food I will be chowing down on buckwheat pancakes and a pile of berries for breakfast; the brilliant quinoa, beetroot, spinach houmous and feta salad (above) for lunch and spelt pizza for dinner. My rule of thumb is going to be – “what am I getting out of this mouthful?” – and if the answer is nutrient-dense, nourishing deliciousness, then down the hatch it goes.
I’m a long-time fan of one-stop-online-shop, Victoria Health. Their live chat help facility is brilliant if you have a specific request or malady. I’ve just stocked up on Astragalus tincture (forget echinacea, this ‘anti-ages your immune system’), some mega strength probiotics (much needed after 4 rounds of IV antibiotics) and some general high-grade multi-vits and omega-3s to boost my general wellness.
So Operation Immune Boost is all stations go, I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
