I have waited a full 3 months before reviewing the Ecoegg laundry egg and even now, the jury is still out. The laundry egg alone for me, isn’t the solution for my family’s laundry habits – not when you have two messy boys to contend with. That said, I would recommend it – just with a whole host of caveats…
1/ Be prepared for your washing machine to STINK. Conventional detergents mask the smell of your washing machine (ewwwww), so when you start using the laundry egg – there is nowhere for it to hide. Ecoegg warn you about it, and sell washing machine detoxers (£4 for a 3 year supply) – it’s basically a build up of soap scum and limescale – so something you should get on top of anyway. Just a heads up.
2/ If you love that ‘freshly washed laundry’ smell, Ecoegg isn’t for you. There is zero fragrancing in the mineral pellets that produce the ‘cleaning foam’ without any harsh chemicals. This is amazing for sensitive skins and in fact they are supported by Allergy UK and the National Eczema Society.
Even thought we’re not an ‘allergy household’ I love knowing I’m just covering their skin in unnecessary chemicals and I do find a lot of detergent brands fragrancing waaaaay too overpowering – but especially on bedlinen, I missed that ‘freshly laundered’ smell. I have since learnt that you can buy scented pearls to add to you wash, so I might give them a try.
3/ Don’t expect mega stain-removing power. I am genuinely really impressed by the general cleaning abilities of the laundry egg. For day to day loads, with minimal wear, it’s great. I’ve gradually learnt that anything remotely stained will need a bit of a boost, but I guess that could be said of most detergents and it is definitely gentler on clothes – no bleaching, fading etc.
4/ You have to wash your clothes in a different way – smaller load sizes, no ‘quick washes’ – to really give the mineral pellets a chance to do their job. Again, not a biggy but when you are a big, messy family and need to get through the washing pile quickly – it might be a factor.
Not sure if that was helpful?! I wanted to be all effusive and glowing in my review because I *want* to love this product, perhaps I just need to perserve and add some tweaks – like the laundry pearls so it is ticking more boxes.
I’d love to hear from other Ecoegg Laundry users and any tips and tricks you’ve found that work!?
