I promised that I would come back to you with a full functionality review of the Kobo Glo e-reader I mentioned earlier this month.
After reading it in 30 degree heat on the beach in Cornwall, as well as at night in bed, I can safely say it reads beautifully.
The ‘comfortlight’ system the Kobo uses is fully changeable. Simply using a slider you can set the light levels depending on your environment. The matte screen meant there was zero glare and there is even a choice of type size/face to make reading super comfortable.
I mentioned before how light it was, probably lighter than our TV remote. I thought I’d snap it with my iPad so you could see how dinky it is:
Having held my sister’s Kindle this weekend for the first time, it really is much lighter. I was considering getting the Kindle Fire but the screen is v. similar to an iPad so there would be eye-strain issues and it weighs a TON!
The only niggle I have with the Kobo, which is probably more to do with me being ‘programmed’ to using Apple interfaces, is the terminology it uses. I was initially looking for a ‘store’, where I could browse the bestsellers and get inspired as to what books to purchase. It’s super easy if you have an author or book title to punch in, but to browse you have to go through the bizarrely titled ‘reading lists’, that are then very clearly categorized by genre. It may just be me that found it all a bit confusing, it just wasn’t as intuitive as it might have been.
That said, for the readability in every light level, battery life (up to 1 month!), lightness and (once I’d found my way around) usability, it is a no-brainer for high-tech book worms.
I was lent the Kobo Glo by the PR to trial for Countryfille.com – the RRP is £99.99 and it’s available at John Lewis, WH Smiths, Argos and Staples.
